I LOVE old surf magazines, partly because they were just plain…cool. Another reason is they bring back so many memories. Memories of this amazing new sport I found. Memories of surfing with friends who are no longer with us.
This issue is from 1972 – a time when there was no internet, no video, not even a monthly surf mag. Surfer and Surfing came every other month. I open these old issues up and realize I have memorized most of the photo captions.
We used to stare at these things for hours and dream of traveling to these amazing places, riding waves that were much better than we had in Pensacola – wondering what it would be like. Would I have the courage to ride such big waves? If I had perfect waves would I really need anything else in life? How could I do this for the rest of my life?
Those were my teenage thoughts as I grew up on the Gulf coast.
