Bert Pittman, around 15 years old, in 1972 or ‘73.
This pier was 50 – 100 yards east of our current pier. It was shorter and a bit lower than now. It was also pretty rickety, and would shake when the surf was big. You can see that the pier was closed for business, but open for anyone to walk out (and jump off). The wetsuits back then weren’t as efficient as today’s – check out how baggy Bert’s suit is. The pink building in the background was the bathhouse. It was a great shelter to hide away from strong, cold north winds, and watch the waves. Finally, his board was a Hank Warner shaped AGP single fin.
