Pickens Point 1973 +/-
One thing that has really changed in the past 50 years is the consistency of the waves at the point. It used to be super dependable – if there was a strong east or southeast wind, you could bypass the choppy “regular” beaches and head to the point for long waves with offshore wind. As the waves wrapped around the point and into the bay, it could get amazing. If the waves weren’t good, you might wait around for the tide to change – like the guys pictured. This little hut was built from driftwood, and was short lived.
L-r: unknown, John Spencer, Yancy Spencer III, guy on roof – unknown. I think the guy with the hat is Bert Tavery – now a 70 year old dentist in St. Augustine who still rides a short board.
