When I graduated high school all I could think about was going to California. The pictures in Surfer Magazine, along with the stories by Hank Warner and Yancy III were too much to resist. Somehow I got to know Bill Sadler. He was from the era before me, but he was nice enough to let me go to San Diego with him. The thing about Bill, was that he didn’t just have one car – he had two! A new, luxurious Monte Carlo, and an older Baja style, VW Beetle…w/ no A/C. Not sure why, but we took the VW – along with his Golden Retriever.
After what seemed like weeks on end, we made it to Bill’s relatives house in Louisiana. We started thinking, “it’s going to take us forever to get across the country”, so we put up the money for airline tickets – for me, Bill…and his dog.
