Yancy III has now been gone 15 years – which means there is a whole new generation of Pensacola surfers who didn’t know him, who haven’t experienced his incredible passion for everything surf. There is a generation who haven’t been able to find the newest sandbar simply by spotting his van on the side of the road. You younger guys won’t be able to ask him the dimensions of a board you had 10 years ago, and then have him give them to you correctly (he could do stuff like that). You won’t be able to ask him a question about any thing surfing related, and then get a thoughtful answer – usually correct.
When Yancy died I wondered how surfing would change in our area. Well, surfing continues, but I think there is a little less passion in the air, a little less stoke, and maybe even a little less direction than we had previously.
