Hanging out with “the crew” 70’s style.
This was early 1975. I don’t recognize the surfers, though I wonder if the 2nd guy from right is John Stack. I think this was at the Cross with the original version of the White Sands Condos in the background.
Back then Pensacola surfers were sort of divided into 2 groups – the pointy nose Challenger Surfboards, and the Egg inspired, rounder boards shaped by Hank Warner or Brian Waters. There were in-between boards, but there were some very pointy Challengers, as seen here.
Dave Skelton brought out a very good point: Pensacola had a heavy San Diego influence. Both Skip Frye (eggs) and Billy Caster/Challenger (pointy guns) were from San Diego. Two opposing styles, from the same place, merged together here in Pensacola.
