54 years ago – in 1970, Surfer Magazine did a “first”. It published a 2 page center-spread of a gulf coast surfer, who lived and surfed in the little town of Pensacola Bch, Fl.
A young guy named Yancy Spencer was surfing his short, wide board, with a very small fin. When he did his bottom turn the fin skidded across the water creating this “hedge” of spray. Local surfer John Hollingshead just happened to capture the image on film. I’d say this photo put the surfing world on notice – there were waves in this place called Pensacola, and this guy named Yancy was worth paying attention to.
(I think the two guys sitting in the lineup are John Russo and Herb Turner.)
