Used VW Bugs were super common surfer cars in the 1970’s. They were cheap (I had a red ‘66 that cost $500), the 4 cylinder engines were easy on the gas, and if they wouldn’t start they were light enough that you could push them 10 yards, jump in, pop the clutch shifting into 2nd gear, and simply be on your way.
This was Lance Moss’s used bug that he drove to San Diego and back in the late 70’s, I believe.
