This is one of my all time favorite Pensacola Beach surf photos. It was taken at the Point (Ft Pickens) on September 11, 1979 – the day before Hurricane Frederic slammed into Mobile, Alabama.
I only wish the surfer was me. It’s actually Steve Horner, who’s now living and surfing in Rockaway Bch, NY.
This was the last consistent day of good surf at the Point/Bay. Prior to that day you could count on fun waves whenever we had an east or southeast swell. Since that day the Point has had its moments, but it’s never been consistent or dependable as it was prior.
