Why paddle, when you can jump?
The pier used to be shorter and lower than our current pier. It was often left wide open when it was closed for business. When it was closed, and locked up, surfers usually climbed over or around the fenced gate.
It was much easier to jump from the pier than paddle out on big outside days, though it was a bit of a shock hitting the water on cold winter days.
