As surfers, we dream about our dream board every day. We walk through shops dreaming and running our hands down the rails and across the concaves of so many boards. We borrow our buddies and spouses boards and compare them against our own personal boards’ performance. This process takes months, but in this case, it took years.
For years, I have been riding the same board. It has always worked for me. It has taken me from double overhead to knee high slop. It has always been lacking though. There have always been things that, if I changed, would make this board perfect.
Enter Waterboyz, the only local shop in this area that custom shapes surfboards. Waterboyz shaper, Rick Bullock, and I started with the board I loved. We went over what made it work and what didn’t work. He and I flipped through his book of surfboard blanks and we decided on the blank that would suit the board of my dreams. After that, we left Rick to work his magic (and work his magic he did).
After my board was shaped, I started to work with Waterboyz glassing and resin art master, Tommy Printiss. He and I looked through pictures, resin colors, and different designs. Tommy helped guide me to what would look best. I was very stuck on what color I wanted my board. Tommy nailed the color. He added pin lines and details that I would have never thought of to bring out the details that make my board incredible.
The weekend after my board was completed, I took it to Saint Augustine. The performance and ride of the board exceeded my expectations. This board can lock a nose ride, turn on a dime, and plane off like no other board I have ever ridden. My dream board is a dream no longer but it rides like a dream. From day one, this board has been loved on. The details, time, and effort put into this board by the people at Waterboyz make this board truly special. I am so incredibly stoked.
Thank you Rick, Tommy, and Sean for such an amazing board. I’m so proud to have such an amazing board that was made here in town where I was able to be a part of every piece of its creation.
